What is cat’s claw?
Cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a woody vine native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical areas of Central and South America. Its common name comes from the curved, claw-like thorns along the vine. The inner bark and root are the parts traditionally used, with a long history of use among indigenous peoples of Peru and the surrounding region.
In the United States cat’s claw is sold as a botanical dietary supplement and is widely available in herbal retail.
Forms of cat’s claw we carry
- Capsules — the most common format, pre-measured.
- Bark powder — loose, for preparing as a tea.
- Cut bark and teas — bagged or loose.
- Liquid extracts and tinctures — concentrated.
Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis
Two related species are both sold as cat’s claw. Uncaria tomentosa is the one most commonly found in the North American supplement market; Uncaria guianensis is also used traditionally in South America. Good labelling names the species outright. If it does not, ask and we will check the supplier paperwork.
What to look for
- Species on the label. It should say which Uncaria you are buying.
